SAN SAN - POND SACK WETLAND RESERVE

Created in September 6, 1993, the San San-Pond Sack Wetland is an important area for the conservation of 133 species of birds, 54 of reptils and a considerable number of amphibians.

The San San-Pond Sack Wetland refill the underground water reservoirs that supply water for the population and use in the banana plantations. Also trap sediments, improving the quality of the water and reducing the efectos of the coastal erosion.

This site, of 16,414 hectares, is an aggregation of channels and shallow brackish and freshwater lakes in the lower basin of the Changuinola and San San rivers. Other habitats include coastal plains and bays formed by the accumulation of sand in littoral strands with sandy beaches and bars along the coast. There are mangroves and an 80 sq km peat swamp.

Due to its importance, the San San-Pond Sack Wetland Reserve was declared RAMSAR site of the world.
